White Lies by Zoe Markham

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review.

All I can say is WOW - I started this book - a little less than 24 hours ago - and granted I don't read very fast - this was one that I could not put down.

The story is told in the first person - Abby a 15 year old girl who is starting overnight boarding school.  Both of her parents are serving in the English military overseas - in a Middle Eastern country.

We know she has a sister Beth, and a male friend Jase - a picture she treasures and we read her texts to and from Beth.   At first things are going well - she is in with the in crowd - until Scarlet decides to do her in - and Scar is going through her own issues.  Basically makes Abby's life a living hell.

Then she meets, Archie, in a graveyard of all places.  The last half of the book is like what - and no -

It totally will blow your mind away.  I think this is one of my favorite books I've read so far.  I don't know if there will be a sequel - can there even be one - but if so I would love to read it.

Thank you so much Readingdeals - Mrs. Markham and Harper Collins!

Clockwiser - by Elle Strauss

http://www.amazon.com/Clockwiser-Book-2-Clockwise/dp/1475206690/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457962321&sr=8-1&keywords=clockwiser

Finished book 2 on Saturday at the park while Wesley played in the sand book - he lost four of his little toys - Woody, and Buzz Jessie and Barbie but we went back on Sunday and they were found and given back to him - note sand boxes seem to absorb whatever is put in it.

Now to the book- this is the second in a series - we find our main character - Casey in a routine with her now boyfriend Nate - and not time jumping as much - until she gets a "cute" next door neighbor and has problems with her brother Tim.

Unfortunately Tim goes back in time with her - and this book is about saving him - one of the clan from the 1860's actually comes back with her - because Tim wanted to be in the Civil War and there are pictures of him from the 1860's in our time.   We all wanted Willie to stay here - but if he didn't go back then ironically, the cop who saved Tim at a bank heist - wouldn't have been there to save him.

I so love twists and turns and this book definitely gave both!  Four thumbs up - and I can't wait to read the next one!

Well all I can really say is wow - I am not allowed to say to much - since it is not out to June.

The action happens in a small town in the North East - reminiscent in my mind to many Stephen King books - and it definitely is spooky like King.

The book kept me at the edge of my seat - murders, voodoo, revenge after a century - who done it - or who is possessed - and that will keep you going right up UNTIL the last page.

I highly recommend this book!  Thank you so much for allowing me to review it - www.netgalley.com.

The Last Gatekeeper by Katy Haye -

"I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review and I have to say I love it - I hope that this isn't just one book that they continue to build on the story line.  We are introduced to the Last Fane Gatekeeper Zanzibar but she of course doesn't know that is what she is.  Her mother is a Fane and her father a human - Zanzibar is tasked with closing the last three portals on Fane to save earth from the evil "fairies" - who also happens to be her aunt - and a horrible "being".  The book was immersive and had me from the first page - in the end Zan is the queen of the fane and is looking to make a portal to get to her "boyfriend" that is on another planet and is also the father of her unborn child.

Thank you so much for allowing me to read the book!

A Murder in Time by Julie McElwain

http://www.amazon.com/Murder-Time-Novel-Julie-McElwain/dp/1605989746/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1456856299&sr=8-1&keywords=a+murder+in+time

I have to admit it took me a country minute to get into the book - but only because of the evil and satanic nature of the main bad guy - I am not normally turned off to books about death - but zombies aren't evil - they just want to eat.  The main bad guy though is EVIL through and through.

After I got through that it was smooth sailing.  Kendra Donovan is a super genius child - her parents were both scientists that were for eugenics.  Kendra at the age of 14 declared her independence - when she told her parents she no longer wanted to be a "subject" they pretty much wrote her off as dead.

Kendra is also a FBI agent - and her partners were murdered in a bust gone bad.  Then Kendra wants to exact revenge.  At that point - all I can say is that Kendra maybe went to the place where she was always supposed to be.

There is a serial killer in this book, death, land of lords and ladies, time travel, you name it - it has it.

I especially loved the ending - I think the one thing that would have given me tingles is if they looked and saw a portrait on the wall.

Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to review this book, thank you Julie McElwain for writing it, and Pegasus Books, LLC.

Crossing in Time by D.L. Orton

http://www.amazon.com/Crossing-Time-Between-Evils-Book-ebook/dp/B00TL8KXIG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1455893441&sr=8-1&keywords=crossing+in+time

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review first off I want to thank the author and publisher and Reading Deals for the opportunity to read this book.

One of my "pet projects" right now is time travel/dimensional travel - :)

One of my favorite quotes from the book is this: "our next goal is find a universe farther away, one where we can verify that something is different from our own world: a street name that has changed or a landmark that is altered."

The story was very well written - and it changes views based on the characters - Isabella the main female lead and Diego the male lead.

I don't want to give to much away - that is always the hard part - because I want you to feel a urge to read the book also.  If you like romance, universe changing, time travel displacement massive death books - along with rogue nukes and tsunami's - then this book is for you.  I am anxiously waiting to read the second book to find out if Isabella is finally reunited with Diego - and if the vaccine is able to save what is left of humanity in a "dimension/universe".

I got to thinking - are Isabella and Diego from our Universe or from an alternate one?  Thank you again!

The Nostalgia Effect by E.J. Valson

http://www.amazon.com/Nostalgia-Effect-E-J-Valson-ebook/dp/B00HAPN23U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1455726990&sr=8-1&keywords=the+nostalgia+effect

I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review - so here are my thoughts -

I am very interested in this whole time travel/parallel reality "theme" at this point.  Our heroine wakes up - that's how the book starts - in bed - and to her surprise - her ex husband is still her husband.  From there - she finds out - that she still works for the same company - but in a different department, her daughter is the same with the ex husband, but younger - her husbands wife - has passed and she has a new stepmother - her grandparents are alive - her mother appears to be one constant that hasn't changed.

She remembers her current husband, in the other timeline and her child but as time goes by - and she is in the other reality for a year - she begins to lose her memories of them.  Then in comes Astrid and John, empaths - who help her regain her memories and try to figure out why she is here.

I think she grew up in this new "reality" - Michael and her, her second husband, were in marriage therapy - and I think this helped her save her marriage.  She appeared to me to be somewhat only concerned about herself - and not just trying to get back home - but in general - she seemed shallow -  Astrid told her that "it isn't just your life here on the line -but we have all these other lifes on the line".

Eventually John comes up with a way, after he meets a man that had a similar "situation" as she did - to get her back home.  I would give it a four -

I wanted to take the time to thank everyone for allowing me to read the book!

Amsterdam 2020 by Ruth Francisco

Boy it took me some time to finish this one!  Had me crying at the end - thank God everyone lived.
I don't want to give to much away - this starts up where the other book ends - but we see it through the eyes of a Dutch girl - she had a good childhood - loving parents - Pieter ...who was killed trying to save the books from being burnt by the Muslims.
Her mother marries a dear family friend that they knew all along, he was Muslim - he becomes the chief of police after the Muslims take over.
It deals with the underground, resistant fighting, sailing, surviving, romance, spy, you name it -the book had it.
I really got more into it - when it was the relationship between Khazan and Salima - and seeing them play off each other.  I really enjoyed the background to Khazan's childhood and education also -

One thing that I feel the need to point out - the Muslim's don't have to go to war in Europe - for a country to grow our stay the same the birth rate has to be over 2.0 - and the Europeans - are 1.3 - their nations are dying from them not reproducing - like it or not.  It is what it is.  I think that one day Europe and the world is going to look much different, for better or for worse, than it once did.

Knitting for Charities

http://www.mnn.com/lifestyle/responsible-living/blogs/10-ways-knit-crochet-for-charity

At times I get overwhelmed, with what is going on in this world - and I think, what can one person do?

The above link is to a blog, that gives you several options on how to help - just think if you do it, then the next and the next - how much better the world will be?

Some of the knitted projects don't look hard to do - and you will be helping other people and a few of those charities were for animals. :)

Be that one person!

Angelborn L. Penelope

Whoosh just finished this great book!  I am sitting here crying :)  Angelborn is a fantasy book about Angels, halfangels etc.  The main male lead- Caleb, is the child of a female angel and a human male.  He has no soul.  So in the book he is attempting to find his "soul mate" Geena/Viv so that way she will bind with him.

When these halfangels die - and assuming they came to the human world, and die here, they go to a horrible place called the "wasteland" unless a human willingly binds their soul to them.

In this book, humans, reincarnate again and again and again - until they are allowed in Euphoria where the angels live.  So, humans just keep repeating the cycle - until at some point they are allowed to enter "Heaven"?
Caleb had come down in the 1940's and met Viv - and he was Caleb then - and fell in love but before he and Viv die - she doesn't bind to him.

We meet Caleb again in the Wasteland - which is a horrible place from the description - I am unsure if humans go there?, but Caleb escapes it with a friend - who gives him the name and address of Geena - which is Viv reincarnated.

In comes Maia - who when we first meet her - at the age of six, is able to see ghosts of those humans who don't move on - good question - if you don't move on - do you always stay a ghost?  Do you never get reincarnated?

Maia is Geena's roommate - who knows what Caleb is - and I don't want to give to much of the book away - sometimes lust isn't love - and love is those willing to die for another.

I really loved this book - thank you so much for allowing me to read it!

X Files - Season 11 Volume 1*

What can I say?  Back in my home park of the supernatural, massive death, genre that I tend to detour to - I LOVED this - I have to admit that it takes a bit for my brain to get used to graphic novels, but within the first page or two I'm kind of right back in it.

Graphics were wonderful, and I loved the storyline - I don't want to give to much away for those that might be buying this wonderful book -

The major bad guy is able to communicate with Mulder and Scully - and he can take various shapes also - a wolf, a crow, and I'm not to sure what he is - it appears that his mother has always been concerned from birth that he wasn't quite normal - spooky music here - and it appears that he is in charge of the FBI or the new, outsourcing company, that they use for the paranormal department.

He can make people die - he can even take over other people and use them to communicate to Scully and Mulder.

Things are never quite what they appear to be.  I want to thank Netgalley and Joe Harris for letting me read this book about a month and a half before it is published!   I can't wait for more :)

Cable Left, Cable Right: 94 Knitted Cables by Judith Durant

I want to take a moment and thank the author Judith Durant, Netgalley and her publisher for allowing me the privilege to view the book before it was published!  Thank you so much!

The book is currently available for purchase as a pre order and a release date of May 31, 2016.

While I viewed a digital copy - I have to say I could almost feel the pages in my hands as I flipped through the book, I could almost feel the thick texture of the pages as I turned them.  The pictures and the  directions are FANTASTIC, and I believe are described well.  The book INSPIRED me.   Now to this factor, I need a FOR Dummy book on cables - you take the yarn and your two needles - etc.  So when I get to the point that I am able to make cables - I will be SURE to purchase this book.

Thank you so much Judith for sharing and inspiring more knitters!

2020 The Countdown Begins by Colonel Bill Best

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review of it.  Thank you Colonel Bill Best, and readingdeals.com.

This appears to be part of a Novella to a bigger story - but it was easy to get into and to figure out who was who and what was going on.

Stacey Townsend is one of our main characters - I believe she was genetically modified and enhanced - so while she looks 30 she is actually 90.  Now how that happened, I would have to read the rest of the story to figure out.  Was she always this way, or did Jason a U.S. Senator - make her that way?  Did he somehow harvest what made "her special" and use it on others - that question was never answered.  But again, I did come in, in the middle of a story.

Jason is desperately wanting to capture Stacey who is a billionaire, with a massive iq, several patents, faster and stronger than a Olympian - again, is it so he can harvest whatever makes her "special" so he can make himself that way?  One thing is for certain, that man is evil and demonic -

Stacey also has a strong faith in God - she went through a large part of the book - attempting to figure out how she will kill Jason- but in the end her friend Roger, who was also her pastor and brought her to the Lord, loses his family in a freak airplane accident- and that brings Stacey back to God.

The book wasn't preachy, it shows from the main characters perspectives, doing the will of God - and in Jason's case - not doing it - and losing his chance at salvation.  Stacey meets a man, a Colonel, that she is attracted to physically and mentally - that she could easily imagine herself with, even for a night, but Stacey stops herself.

The colonel wonders why, he has "picked up numerous women" - to have some fun with and to spice up his "vanilla marriage".

Overall I really liked the book, like I said it was more like jump in to the action, and not having all the answers is kind of weird, but that's how my mind moves.  :)  I would highly recommend this book and will be looking for future books by Colonel Best.

Grayling's Song by Karen Cushman

http://www.amazon.com/Graylings-Song-Karen-Cushman-ebook/dp/B011H55J4S/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1454521004&sr=1-1&keywords=grayling%27s+song

Sitting here I just finished this great book - as always I would like to thank Netgalley and Clarion Book along with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt  to have the opportunity to read this book before it is officially released June 7.

This is where I am going to get into a bit of a jam, I realize probably no one views my blog but in case someone does and plans to buy the book- how much do I say without spoiling the story?

This is a tale of magic and deception and growing up.

Grayling when the book first starts is a timid shy girl who is happy to live under her mom - but by the end of the book - she is ready to go on her own.  After all, she saved all the magicians and magic folks, not just by herself but with the help of other hag witches sorcerers and enchantresses - along with a talking shape shifting loyal mouse.

I highly recommend it - no sex no cursing - even for adults I think this was a great book.

Several times it had me in tears especially when Pook had to be left with Auld Nancy.

Her mother seems very cold - I have to say I think Auld Nancy was more motherly towards her - not to mention Pansy.

I hope that we get to see more books to this series - I have a feeling we will see Grayling and Pansy duke it out :)

Christian Fiction for your Kindle

http://christianfictionebooks.blogspot.com/2016/02/15-free-books-today.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ChristianFictionForYourKindle+%28Christian+Fiction+for+Your+Kindle%29

Just finished the Anthrax Protocol by James Thompson

I am going to give this book two thumbs up - I guess I need to come up with a rating system.

I have to preface this and say, that I generally love this genre of fiction - death is my thing.

And I love outbreaks of diseases - and then spying and crooked U.S. officials- so this book was up my alley.

It started off in the past, at the time of Montezuma's death and then fast forward until today.  At that point the book was a roller coaster - you have the CDC, Navy, Army, USARMID, and mercenaries - not to mention a tribe of Mexicans that were the descendants of those that survived the original outbreak.

I have to say Lauren, the archeologist was a bit of a enigma to me- she was the one telling the team that they needed to go to the village of the survivors to get the blood samples - so they could come up with a treatment and vaccine for the plague - but she didn't know what a MRE or the CDC was?

And I have to admit I didn't like the mercenaries - I'm glad they killed blade in the jungle - that is a soulless human - and they even become heroes in their own right by taking at the evil Colonel and General!

I will definitely be looking for more books by this author and I want to thank him, his publisher - Pinnacle Books and Kensington Publishing Corp. for allowing me to read this book!

Clockwise

Absolutely LOVED THIS BOOK! Okay granted I might be into time travel and alternate dimensions/realities - so it is right up my alley.

The story started off with us meeting Casey - and her best friend ogling the school football/baseball players - we then learned she had been traveling in time since she was 9 years old. How her and her best friend had went back in the past - it seems if you are touching Casey at the time she "trips" - you go with Casey.

She always seems to go to one particular time 1860's in her "hometown" - we meet the family that she always stays with. Her crush actually jumps with her and they eventually become a couple.

We meet Samuel in the 1860's a "runaway slave" who turns out to be a traveler like her - and is ......
Well you will have to read that part!

Excellent book - I wish they would make movies out of books - this would be one that I would pay to go see!

Well Ctrl Z works in blogger -thank goodness - One thing that I really loved about this book was to see the evolution if that is even the proper term - of race relations in the US - So Casey is a traveler who mets Samuel a "slave" who is a traveler and travels with him to his "time" 1951 to observe the birth of her father - and at the end she meets up with another traveler - who I am betting is somehow related to her :)

Night and the enemy

I just read this graphic novel on Netgalley - thank you so much to Dover Publications for letting me read it!

I loved the graphics, the story was unique - I wish Hollywood would actually do a movie on it - instead of tired old stories that they tell over and over again.

The graphics were eye popping and the story line had many twists and turns!  you want to talk about a book that kept you on the edge of your seat - this is it!

Dead Reckoning a review

I really liked the book - and the concept of it - and it left me thinking afterwards - like the island of people who support the island the main character is on - did anyone warn them about the hurricane/typhoon that was about to hit?  The disparities were quite shocking.  I also found the lead character to be somewhat naïve at times, but then again many people are - i.e. thinking that the government wants the best for you.  I don't have red colored glasses on.  I gave it a four - only because I got lost in the descriptions of the weather, and the sea.  I enjoyed the book when the action started picking up and I feel let down at the ending - the chapter before the end it mentions his son and the woman he saved, but not his daughter?  and after we went through all of this - I just wish that there had been so more typing up the characters.

Did my washcloth over

Well another - I have to say, not many times will I admit I am stupid, I thought I was using needles that were 7 - they were marked 7 - lol - they must have be a 10 - so I found a real 7 and reknit grandmothers favorite dishcloth - I like it - tighter - which would probably be better when washing. :)

The Palace Library

Well I just finished this read.  I have to say that I liked it - and I can't wait to read the sequel.  It was reminiscent of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe in some ways - however, it isn't.

If you like reading books without a "heavy" religious overtone - this one is more that style.  They do mention "praying" at one point - but in no reference to any particular deity.  Of course the characters are English, and this was in the early 1900's - so it is safe to say it was God of the Christian belief.

I loved the description of the dog in the painting, Sophie - Eleanor first pets her - and finds the library - she has to convince her two elder cousins that the Library exists.  Turns out that their uncle is part of a council, that is "based in all ages" - so the three of them go back in time to make another sword - Sword of State for the English monarchs.

We have dragons, and dwarves in the book - and magic - also spies and treachery.

I think it is very clean and appropriate for school age children - Amazon recommends 8 to 12 year olds.

I want to thank the great people at Netgalley for allowing me the pleasure of reading this book.  And the publishers and author of course!  Can't wait to read the sequel!

Dating Dining and Desperation By Melody Carson

Is the second of the so far four book series, Dear Daphne.

In the book we meet Daphne - who inherits a house, and a nice stipend from her Aunt Dee.  Of course, nothing in life comes free, and along with her inheritance there are some stipulations.  Namely that she marries within a year of the inheritance.

I don't know how many spoilers I want to put here - but I guess I'll be the normal me :)  Daphne finds out that her Aunt Dee is actually her grandmother.  She became pregnant, and instead of terminating the pregnancy, she let her parents adopt her son.  Which would be good I mean it is a Christian novel.
Daphne has no idea and neither did her father.

In this book, her father gets married - we meet a interesting new neighbor from Atlanta and Daphne becomes involved in a child's life - Mabel.  Mabel's mom has passed, and her father is in prison - so her grandmother Vera takes her in.  Vera has cancer and unfortunately dies towards the later end of the book - so while waiting for her uncle to come and take care of her - Daphne takes her in.

Prior "romantic relationships" with her lawyer Jake - look to be heating up at the end of this book.  Jake knows the condition to the inheritance.

I know it sounds disjointed - but this book was a feel good book, to see everyone coming together for Vera and for Mabel was heartwarming.  I can't wait to read the next book - Home, Hearth and the Holidays.  All three books are available for the Amazon Kindle and I am sharing the link - like I said I would give them two thumbs up. :)

I hope to continue to read more books by Ms. Carson.

This pattern makes a nubbly dishcloth, thicker and more stable than plain garter stitch.  Chinese Waves is one of my favorite pattern stitches.  I use it for edgings and for textured stripes interspersed with stockinette.  I like it so much, it's actually pictured in the left border throughout my web site. Chinese Waves is based on garter stitch, so there's no purling and it doesn't curl up.  Use any worsted weight 100% cotton yarn, such as  Sugar 'n Cream and #7 needles.  Cast on 45 stitches (Any odd number of stitches will do.)  Row 1: Knit across (this is the right side)
Row 2: *K1, Slip 1*  repeat between * across, ending K1.
Row 3: Knit across
Row 4: K2, *Slip 1, K1* repeat between * until 3 stitches remain, Slip 1, K2.  Keep working in pattern until piece is square, finishing with a wrong side row.  Bind off in knitting on the right side.  I usually slip the slipped stitches as if to purl.  But you can also slip as if to knit, which twists the stitch when you knit it on the next row, making a slightly tighter fabric.  I like both ways equally well.  The yarn carried across the back of all the slipped stitches makes little curves across the dishcloth, which look like rows of little waves, hence the name "Chinese Waves."

I believe I am going to attempt to make a cowl - it is awfully cold in the office and I almost sit under a vent - also I am going to turn on the heater - and I was thinking about doing this one

GAUGE:
16 sts + 25 rnds = about 4 in. (10 cm) in St st worked in the rnd (k every rnd).
When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Not with that wool - I am going to look through my stash and see what I can find - but that looks like it will work wonders for me - I love my scarf but it just doesn't seem to cover up most of my neck. lol.  How do women wear low cut shirts/dresses in the cold? :)  I guess if they want to move up, they show off the goods :) that was so mean.
